A walk on the wild side: Oryza species as source for rice abiotic stress tolerance Genet. Mol. Biol.
Menguer,Paloma Koprovski; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Ricachenevsky,Felipe Klein.
Abstract Oryza sativa, the common cultivated rice, is one of the most important crops for human consumption, but production is increasingly threatened by abiotic stresses. Although many efforts have resulted in breeding rice cultivars that are relatively tolerant to their local environments, climate changes and population increase are expected to soon call for new, fast generation of stress tolerant rice germplasm, and current within-species rice diversity might not be enough to overcome such needs. The Oryza genus contains other 23 wild species, with only Oryza glaberrima being also domesticated. Rice domestication was performed with a narrow genetic diversity, and the other Oryza species are a virtually untapped genetic resource for rice stress tolerance...

Establishment of drought screening protocols for rice under field conditions Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Sakai,Tomoko; Duque,Myriam Cristina; Vallejo Cabrera,Franco Alirio; Martínez,César Pompilio; Ishitani,Manabu.
Protocols were established for screening rice genotypes for tolerance to water-limited conditions under field conditions. These protocols were successfully used to select the best genotypes for further experiments. Rice genotypes responded differently when subjected to water-limited conditions. Experiments conducted under field conditions indicated that rice genotypes Curinga and CT6241 performed much better in terms of grain yield under water-limited conditions than varieties Azucena, Nerica, CICA8 and Palmar. Curinga, CT6241, CICA8 and Palmar were selected for further studies. The first two genotypes are tolerant and whereas the last two are susceptible to water stress.

Morphoagronomic genetic diversity in american wild rice species BABT
Veasey,Elizabeth Ann; Silva,Edson Ferreira da; Schammass,Eliana Aparecida; Oliveira,Giancarlo Conde Xavier; Ando,Akihiko.
To characterize the genetic variability among species and populations of South American wild rice, eleven populations of Oryza glumaepatula, seven of O. grandiglumis, four of O. latifolia and one of O. alta, from Brazil and Argentina, were evaluated. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in completely randomized blocks with 23 treatments. Twenty morphoagronomic traits were assessed. Univariate analyses were performed with 16 quantitative traits with the partitioning of populations within species. Significant differences (p<0.001) between species were observed for all the traits as well as among populations within the species. The most variable was O. glumaepatula followed by O. latifolia. Multivariate discriminant canonical and cluster analyses...

Silicon sources for rice crop Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Hamilton Seron; Korndörfer,Gaspar Henrique; Vidal,Anelisa de Aquino; Camargo,Mônica Sartori de.
Although silicon is not an essential nutrient, its application is beneficial for plant growth and development. To evaluate silicon sources in relation to agronomic efficiency and economic viability in rice crops (Oryza sativa L.), a greenhouse experiment was conducted, Quartzipsamment soil, in a completely randomized experimental design (n = 4). Treatments were 12 silicon sources and a control. Silicon was applied at the rate of 125 kg Si ha-1. Data were compared to a standard response curve for Si using the standard source Wollastonite at rates of 0, 125, 250, 375, and 500 kg Si ha-1. All treatments received CaCO3 and MgCO3 to balance pH, Ca and Mg. One hundred and fifty days after sowing, evaluations on dry matter yield in the above-ground part of...
